Online Shop FAQs

Is shopping online safe?

Usually, yes. All mainstream browsers are designed to determine whether a website offers secure transactions. You can tell by the lock symbol in the bottom right of the browser. As in real life, you shouldn’t hand out your credit card information carelessly, but it is safe to shop from a website like Amazon without having your information stolen.

What are some of the advantages and drawbacks to shopping online?

One of the biggest advantages to shopping online is the sheer convenience. From the peace and quiet of your own home you should be able to find almost anything you are looking for, read reviews, compare prices, and have it shipped to you. Especially for people who have never particularly enjoyed traveling from store to store, this is extremely valuable technology.

Conversely, one of the biggest drawbacks for some people is the inability to interact with a real, live human being. This takes away to the ability to ask specific questions. Many people also enjoy shopping as a social event, and that feels far less the case when you are in your living room.

Does shopping online damage local business?

The answer to this is indefinite and complicated. Take the example of flower shops. Many local flower shops have complained that they have lost huge portions of their revenue to people who, instead of coming down to the shop and picking out an arrangement, instead choose to do this online and have the flowers delivered.

At the same time, many local shops have adapted to the technology. Today, many local flower shops will feature an online component and deliver so that you have the option of shopping online and having the flowers delivered, while still having the option to come in if that is your preference.
